South Indian Architecture
The south Indian style of temple architecture can be easily disintegrated
into four periods corresponding to the principal kingdoms which ruled in
southern India down the centuries. The greatest accomplishments of Pallava
architecture are the rock- cut of temples at Mahabalipuram. Chola
architecture achieved its peak at Thanjavur, the capital established by the
Chola ruler Rajaraja I. Temples erected during the Hoysala kings have
complicated plans with numerous angled projections. Temples from the Hoysala
period can still be seen at Belur, Halebid and Sringeri. By the 16th century
almost all of southern India was part of the Vijayanagara empire. The
characteristic feature of this period is the development of the temple
complex: concentric series of rectangular enclosure walls with the gopuras
(towered gateways) in the middle of each side.
Music & Dance
Carnatic music is the classical music of Southern India. The basic form is
a monophonic song with improvised variations. There are 72 basic scales on
the octave, and a rich variety of melodic motion. Both melodic and rhythmic
structures are varied and compelling. This is one of the world's oldest &
richest musical traditions.
South
India has a very rich tradition of classical dance. For many centuries the
dancers were attached to the temples and has maintained a strong religious
flavour to dance. The various classical styles are of South India are
Bharatnatyam of Tamil Nadu, Kathakali of Kerala, Kuchipudi of Andhra
Pradesh. Bharatnatyam is an Indian classical dance form from the state of
Tamil Nadu, which depicts the language of rhythm and melody in different
patterns of curves, angles and lateral movements.
Bharatnatyam has a devotional basis and owes its origins to Devadasis
(temple dancers). Kathakali, a well-developed dance-drama, is a performance
where the actors depict characters from the epics Ramayana and Mahabharata
and from the Puranas (ancient scriptures). The genesis of Kuchipudi art as
of most Indian classical dances is associated with religions. For a long
time, the art was presented only at temples and that too only for annual
festivals of certain temples in Andhra.
